Studies on morphological plasticity are extremely important to plant breeding seeking to optimize genotype interactions with their environments. The present study evaluated 38 genotypes of Brachiaria ruziziensis cultivated during the rainy (October to March) and dry (April to September) seasons and examined variations in their anatomical characteristics. Fully expanded leaves were collected and fixed in FAA70 (formaldehyde: acetic acid: ethyl alcohol) for 72h and subsequently stored in 70% alcohol. Median sections of leaf blades were examined and evaluated according to traditional plant anatomical procedures. Genotypes 15, 27, 40, 53, and 90 demonstrated interactions with the environment in five of the anatomical characteristics evaluated; genotypes 1 and... |

This study aimed to analyse the allelopathic bioactivity of fresh and infused aqueous extracts of Brazilian cherry leaves on the germination of lettuce and the initial development of maize. Brazilian cherry leaves were used to prepare a fresh aqueous extract (200 g L-1) and an infused extract (100 g L-1), which were diluted to concentrations of 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6 or 2.0% w/v. The variables evaluated in lettuce were the germination rate (GR), germination time index (GTI), germination speed index (GSI) and root length (RL). To determine the effect on the initial development of maize, we measured the shoot (SL) and root (RL) length. The experimental design included a factorial 2 × 5 design (two extracts and five concentrations), in addition to a control... |

The upper Paraná River floodplain is characterized by the existence of several aquatic and transitional habitats between the aquatic and terrestrial environment, influencing the presence and distribution of aquatic macrophytes. Samples were taken from different places and permanent slides were prepared for analysis and capture of images with the objective of comparing the anatomy of the roots of eight species of emergent aquatic macrophytes. The species feature uniseriate epidermis with narrow and long cells, cortex composed of uniseriate or biseriate exodermis, with or without thickening, aerenchyma with great gaps, uniseriate endodermis, with or without thickening, continuous or interrupted pericycle, and central cylinder with variable number of xylem... |

The objective of this study was to determine the proximal composition, the physical and chemical characteristics and the in vitro antioxidant capacity (DPPH, ABTS and FRAP) of the pulp of the wild passion fruit (Passiflora glandulosa Cav.) from Cariri region, Ceara, Brazil. The results showed that the proximal composition and the caloric value of this passion fruit are similar to other species, but with a high ascorbic acid content. The fruit pulp showed low level of antioxidant activity and low level of polyphenolic compounds followed by three methodologies used. Due to high levels of titratable acidity (3.52) and total soluble solids (17.80° Brix), this fruit can be considered as a high value fruit for commerce. However, it is a species of passion fruit... |

Fluorides released during the manufacture of aluminum, fertilizers, glass and ceramics are considered to be highly toxic to plants, causing damages in relatively small concentrations. This study aimed to evaluate fluoride (F) accumulation and its effects on Vitex polygama Cham. (Verbenaceae) exposed to simulated rain containing potassium fluoride in concentrations of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg L-1. Vitex polygama presented no visual symptoms of foliar injury and accumulated a relatively small amount of F-, significant only for the treatments with higher concentrations of the pollutant. F- promoted an increase in non-photochemical quenching (qN) and in the coefficient due to non-photochemical extinction (NPQ), which indicates higher dissipation of radiant energy... |

Shade plants of ombrophilous forests are subjected to light-limiting conditions and need to invest in architectural structures associated with leaf symmetry to increase light capture. This study investigated the leaf architecture of six Araucaria forest tree species with distinct symmetry: Cupania vernalis, Casearia sylvestris, Schinus terebinthifolius, Piper gaudichaudianum, Roupala brasiliensis and Cedrela fissilis. We hypothesized that symmetry, associated with other traits, minimizes self-shading. Asymmetry index, petiole length, total leaf area, leaf angle, internode length and stem diameter were measured. The asymmetry index did not indicate a clear distinction between asymmetric and symmetric leaves. Leaves classified as asymmetric had higher... |

Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess. is a tree species that is presented as an alternative to replace endangered species of hardwood. The morphology and anatomy of the seedling of this species is the object of the present study. Seedlings at different stages of development were obtained in greenhouse and analyzed fresh and fixed in FAA (Formalin-Acetic-Alcohol) 50. The anatomical analysis was done by the freehand and microtome sections, according to standard techniques in plant anatomy. The seedling and/or tirodendro is cryptocotylar and hypogeal, has cataphylls, and presents eophylls and metaphylls simple with venation pinnate craspedodromous simple. The root is polyarch, the hypocotyl is very short, the cotyledons have an oily and starchy reserve, the... |

Micona sellowiana in different types of vegetation (Grassland, Montane Atlantic forest, Upper Montane Atlantic forest and Araucaria Pine forest). Although such variability could be due to phenotypic plasticity, an alternative explanation for this phenomenon is the existence of genetic differentiation among populations resulting from genetic drift or adaptation to different environments. The goal of the present study was to investigate the extent of genetic structures among populations of Miconia sellowiana using a neutral dominant genetic marker (RAPD - Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA). There was considerable variability in the studied samples, resulting in 96.5% polymorphic loci and a Gst = 0.13. The analysis of molecular variance showed the... |
